About the club

Marin Field Hockey Club

Marin Field Hockey Club is one of 7 or 8 teams playing in the Bay Area Field Hockey Association (BAFHA) league, the new season is due to start in mid to late March and usually runs until late August/early September. Though we have a good base of regulars, we welcome new players. Our team strikes a nice balance of playing with a fun spirit and some skill, plus it’s a great way to meet new people, so if you’re interested please read on ...

Skill level varies, but it would definitely help if you’ve played before – though it doesn’t have to be at a very high level. It also doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for a while, most people find they remember the fundamentals quicker than they expect. Oh yes, we are a co-ed team, and encourage everyone to participate.

Games take place either in Berkeley Campus (at Maxwell Field, near Cal Bears stadium) or in Palo Alto at the Stanford Campus. If you have your own transport then great, if not we can work something out to get you a ride to the game. Details of the league, fixtures and results etc from previous years can be found here: BAFHA.   During the season we publicize match details via email invites (google-vite), so all can see arrangements with minimum hassle.

Please fill out the New Player Form and send in your request. You may also send in your questions through this form and we will get back to you. You can also contact us through our facebook page.

p.s. people often ask when our practices are… it’s challenging to get field time so it’s more about the games, but it’s sometimes possible to practice with other teams if you are interested in doing so. And don’t worry if you don’t live in Marin – that’s not a requirement, and nor do we practice there.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Where do games take place?

Either at Berkeley (Maxwell Field, near the Cal Bears Stadium) or at Stanford. Full league schedule is posted at bafha.org

How often do you practice?

Rarely. Unfortunately it’s very hard for all teams in the Bay Area to get pitch time. When we practice, Marin typically tag onto when one of the other teams has a field booking. Said another way, there’s not a regular schedule outside of the league season, which runs from mid-March to late August. Cal Berkeley team sometimes have friday night practices, and we encourage our members to participate.

Do I have to have played before/recently?

Sure, it helps but it’s NOT essential. If you’ve not played in years – don’t worry. You will remember far more, far more quickly than you imagined. You will be just fine. And if you’ve never played before but fancy giving it a go, we will find a way to get you some practice time before throwing you into a proper game.

How much does it cost?

Subscriptions for a full season are in the range of $120 to $140, depending on the amount we have to pay the league for field rentals.

Who are your players?

A varied mix of Brits, French, Irish, Germans, Indians, Pakistanis, Dutch, Aussies, Thai, you name it. And yes, we even have an American or three.

Do you have to live in Marin to play for Marin F.H.C.?

No - You can live wherever you want and still play for us.

Are there tournaments to play in?

There are several throughout the year, but they are all optional and by no means essential, it’s up to the individual.

Do you have to wear a skirt/Is it only a game for girls?

No to both of these!
